Spring Break at Mt. Bachelor, 1998
Some photos from
Mt. Bachelor, OR,
from a spring skiing adventure with the
Champaign Ski Club.
The weather was weird, and the skiing ranged from lousy to excellent.
But overall I think a great time was had by all.
Mt. Bachelor
A view of Mt. Bachelor from our lodgings at
Sunriver Resort,
about 15 or 20 miles away. This was taken on Sunday afternoon, after
our first day of skiing, and it was the only time we got to see Mt.
Bachelor from Sunriver. The rest of the week the area around the
mountain was completely clouded over. The dark brown area in the
foreground is the mudfield that is one hole of Sunriver's golf course
work in progress.
Slope Scenes
- Having made his pitch, the "Hot Buns" guy moves on, but not
without a last word from the Red Rocket.
- Don, Dennis C., Dennis L., Joe, Red Rocket, and Pee-tah.
- Upper Pine Marten lodge, seen from the Northwest Crossover.
Note the lovely background scenery; we saw lots of this.
- The Summit Express lift house, elevation 7300 ft., CLOSED.
Sadly, the summit chair opened only twice during the week, and only
briefly both times. Once a group of about 10 of us had time to make
one run, and once Jim alone had time for three quick runs. For the
rest of the week we never even could see the summit, let
alone ski it. :-(
- Chair 37
on the Northwest Express descends into the icy wilderness.
- Plenty of good snow at Mt. Bachelor. We spent a lot of
time wishing we could see it.
NASTAR Racers
Pay attention now, there'll be a quiz later. That's Bill, Carl,
David, Denny, Don, Jim, John, Lisa, Mike, Peter, Phil, Randy, Tanya,
and Tracy. We had
two "club races" this week,
with 16 and 17 racers respectively, and a total of 27 medals. Thanks
to MaryAnn for taking these pictures while I was busy being one of the
17 on Friday (and two of the 27 total).
Warning Signs
At most ski areas, that first sign is instructional. But on
our first day at Mt. Bachelor, it was informative. With
drizzly, rainy, above-freezing conditions, the snow snakes were out in
force, grabbing your skis and practically holding you in place on the
slopes. Thankfully, the conditions got infinitely better for the rest
of the week.
As for the second sign, well, let's just say no one tested its
veracity...
The Sunrise Bar
We pretty much owned the bar at the Sunrise Lodge for the week.
It served as our gathering place for lunch and throughout every
afternoon as people drifted in and out, some trading skis for pitchers
earlier than others.
- Marsha, Linda, Phil, Don, Charlotte, Peter, Jany, Carl,
Randy, and Judy.
- MaryAnn, Randy, Judy, and Don listen (or not) politely to what
Phil has to say.
- Mike and Dottie watch in amazement as Bill (our trip leader)
astonishingly predicts not only the number that will appear in the
caption, but also the number that will appear in the filename of the
scanned image of the picture.
- Linda, Charlotte, Jany, Peter, John, Charlotte (behind John),
Randy, Phil, David, Judy, MaryAnn, and Don. All the small people in the
background are CSCers, too. Like I said, we owned the bar, especially
around closing time (which it must have been on this day, since Peter
and Dennis and I were there).
- Judy pours Don another one as he reflects on the day.
- Linda and Dana listen intently(?) to Dennis's adventure stories.
- The obligatory group photo.
- (Photo by Jany.) Not actually taken at the Sunrise Bar, but I
had to find somewhere to put a picture of the cool hat I won
at the pizza party.
Hot Tubbers
At times we also owned the capacious hot tub at Sunriver. I
counted 18 club members in the tub once, with others coming and going,
but we never really came close to the capacity.
- "Hey, Champaign!"
- I said, "HEY CHAMPAIGN!!" L to R, that's Judy, David, Tanya,
Carl, Peter, Phil, Nancy, and Dave.
- Don pauses for a shivery hello.
- Whoops, those are hot tubers, sorry.
Heading Home
- Buicks lined up and getting ready to head out.
- Buick art (that's the
Champaign Ski Club
logo, in case you didn't know).
- The Crooked River as seen from
the scenic overlook along Highway .
- Dennis, Don and Lisa gawking at
Horsetail Falls in the Columbia River gorge.
